7/30/2012: Last Week!

Hi family!

So lots has gone on this week.

It turns out that Sister Law will not be coming with us, as her visa hasn't arrived yet, and there have been some administrative issues with advancing her-- our teachers' supervisor was supposed to get it sorted out a week ago or so,  but we visited the travel office today and they still have no word from our supervisor about advancing her. They might temporarily reassign her to a stateside mission while she waits for a visa. I'm sad she's not coming with us.

Thirdly, I got my travel plans this week!! We leave the MTC at 6am on Monday the 6th, have a layover at LAX from something like 11-1, and then will fly Cathay Pacific straight to Hong Kong. So we leave the MTC 6:00am on Monday and get to Hong Kong 7pm on Tuesday. Weird time changes. That was really fun. A few other Mandarin districts on our floor got theirs at the same time, so our hall was in a state of semi-celebration for the hour or so after lunch.

4) My roommate Alisse Frandsen got her mission call! She's going to the Chile Concepcion Mission!! Yay!! I'm really excited for her. She leaves Sept 12, so she doesn't have much time to get ready!

5) The other day Sister Lin and I went off campus for a dr's appointment, and while I was in the waiting room it was really cool because I felt the Spirit just kind of settle on me saying "There's someone here you need to talk to." I felt when a woman who had hurt her knee walk in that she was the one, so I chatted with her some. I'm still not sure why I was supposed to talk with her, but it seemed to cheer her up because she looked like she was in a lot of pain. Then I met a man there who said he lived in the Oakton Ward until about 2006 or something-- his name is John Hill-- ring any bells?

6) Then on the way back, in the shuttle van I got talking to a couple of elders, and discovered one of them was an Elder Brian Doll from the McLean 2nd Ward! I was kind of freaking out about how small of a world it is. I couldn't get over how the last time I had seen him he was probably 11 years old. So weird. He remembered the family, and said to say hi! He said his family's doing very well. And his younger sister is starting her senior year I think it was?? What the what.

7) I also saw this week in the cafeteria an Elder Pizza, which made me laugh. The best part? He's going to Italy. Hahahaha. I was thinking "Is this for serious?" Sister Lin said "President Monson must have been tired that day!" Awesome.

8) There's also a new Mandarin missionary on our floor named Elder Heaton! I talked with him, and he said his grandpa's name is Lamont, but he couldn't remember any further up his family tree. He did say his family's from the southern Utah area though, which means he's some kind of distant cousin!

9) And last, I have a fun language mess-up. So the word for charity and Cantonese is yahn-ngoi, which literally means people-love (actually sister Lin told me that it was a different character for yahn, so it actually means mercy, but I only found this out later). So in my prayers I'd pray to have charity, naturally, but a lot of the time I'd forget the order and say ngoi-yahn, which literally means love-people. Easy mistake, right? Well, I learned a couple of days ago when we were practicing teaching the Law of Chastity, that ngoi-yahn actually means "lover," which means I have prayed for a lover on several occasions. Hahahaha.  Good thing we figured this out before I left the MTC, or I might've confused a fair amount of investigators. So for future reference, charity is yahn-ngoi, not ngoi-yahn. Just so we're clear. Haha.'

10) Also, I'm supposed to say the closing prayer at the big devotional tomorrow! I'm crossing my fingers for an apostle to be the speaker!

So yes, this week has been quite eventful! I look forward to my last week here.

Love you all! Have a great week! It might be Wednesday in Hong Kong before I can email you all again! Sweet!
