Hi Family!
I'm here! The flight was quite long, but I slept for a fair amount
of it. It felt like someone had drugged me since I couldn't stay awake
for too long or sleep for too long. I've liked it here so far! We've
done very little missionary work yet-- we've done a lot of training, and
due to some complications involving a customs official not stamping my
visa, we had to go back to the airport to get it stamped so I could get a
Hong Kong ID card, so Sis Lin and I missed out on finding with the
assistants. Oh well. Today is P-day and we got assigned our trainers!
Mine is named Sister Kiene, and she's from Mesa, Arizona. I think we'll
do well together. For some reason I was surprised at how young she
looks, but I guess she is only a year older than me. Our area's called
Sham Shui Po and Cheung Sha Wan, next to the area the temple's in. I
haven't been there yet, since we've been running errands this morning
and haven't moved my stuff yet.
It's pretty muggy, but we've managed to be inside a lot, so it
hasn't been too bad. Last night we got to help with an English class,
which was pretty fun. Apparently tonight we have some kind of youth
activity, so I'm excited for that. We also have an 18-year old local
serving a mini-mission with us, so she's been good for practicing my
Cantonese before I have to talk to non-members. She helped us figure
out my full Chinese name, which is Hahng Fuhng Lihng. (Dad, you were
right on the character!) Also, I met some of the missionaries in my
district, and it includes a kid I went to EFY with once upon a time (the
same group that I was in with Sister Cutler), which was kind of
mind-blowing for the both of us. He's training one of the elders who
came in the transfer before us.
I've again just been really impressed with President and Sister
Hawks. They are just awesome. I think President Hawks is the man to whip
the mission into shape, because from the sounds of it it's been pretty
relaxed and numbers have been down recently. Also, Sister Hawks makes
amazing food and reminds me a bit of Debbie Goodson, so naturally I like
her. I'm excited to be working with them.
I can already tell my Cantonese is improving, which is comforting.
I'm still pretty worn out from the jet-lag, etc, but hopefully it'll be
all good.
I'm glad I could talk to some of you on Monday! It was nice hearing all your voices.
Love you! Pray for me-- I'm gonna need it!
Sister Heaton
