9/6/2012: One Month in Heung Gong!

Jousahn!

I've been in Hong Kong for a month now! Can you believe it? Sometimes I feel like I've been here forever, but when I think about it it doesn't seem like I've been here a month yet. Crazy! The language is coming slowly but surely. Knowing Chinese is a good way of finding, since people are like "What! You know Chinese?!" and they'll ask us how long we've lived here, and when I say a month they're always shocked and ask me how, and I always tell them Tinfuh helps me (that's Heavenly Father-- the Chinglish is coming out), although most of the time they don't believe me.

Speaking of finding, we've been doing a lot more of that this week. Haha. We're still on the quest for progressing investigators-- we've taught a few first lessons but have had trouble scheduling to meet them later. It's hard to explain to someone who is happy with their life as it is why they need to change and come unto Christ. While any Phillipina we talk to, on the other hand, is like "OK,  I'll go to your church, I'm interested in your pamphlet, baptize me right now please," so it's quite a contrast.

Yesterday was my first time being mistaken as a Jehovah's Witness! The woman I was talking to looked so relieved when I told her I wasn't a Jehovah's Witness, but a Mormon Missionary. It was pretty funny. Perks of being a Sister I guess-- we don't have the stigma the elders do.

We also tend to keep finding the Chinese people in Hong Kong that don't know Cantonese. We've run into a couple of people who when we start speaking to them in Chinese look completely alarmed, then will say "Sorry, I don't speak Cantonese," as their excuse for trying to get away from us, and we're both like "That's too bad, because clearly we don't speak English," but really say "Great! Neither do we!" It's funny.

But this week has been pretty great-- we've been going off faith quite a bit, and it's worked out quite well, so that's really strengthened my faith. Our new or potential investigators tend to fong us (or cancel on us) at the last minute, so we've been praying super hard that they'll come, and usually they do, and when they don't, we'll have a surprise lesson with someone else. We also randomly showed up at a less-active member's house this week just going on faith that she'd be home, and it turned out she was, and seemed really receptive to us! She's probably coming to church on Sunday!  So my testimony of faith in the Lord has increased a lot this week. He provides a way for us to meet the goals he inspires us to set!

Some other random stuff from this week:
- I sat next to an old woman as she ate a fish head
- I have a Hong Kong ID now! I'm official!
- The bakeries here are amazing. I was surprised to find out Hong Kong even really has bakeries. But they have a ton of them. And they're so, so good. So good.
- And pictures!! Yay!

The 1st is the classic map picture at the MTC (The weird skirt I'm wearing is called the traveling skirt, and has been passed from sister to sister in the MTC for who knows how long-- I felt pretty legit for getting it).

2nd one is our first MTC group.

The 3rd is the younger MTC group.

The 4th is me and my companion at Monkey Mountain.

The 5th is with Justine, who got baptized on my first Sunday here. She's awesome. The girl on the other side of me is our summer missionary, and I have a picture with her wherein she looks scarily like the Asian version of Rachel Boody.

The 6th is me with Jeng Jimuih, our most recent baptism.

Oh yeah! I had a cool story about Jeng Jimuih! She was confirmed this Sunday, and in her confirmation blessing, it said she'd have the blessings of an eternal family (she's currently divorced and only one daughter is a member), and that she'll be able to do temple work for many of her ancestors with a healthy body! YAY! She has so much faith-- she's so great.

And since everyone's been asking, I have no maid here to do cooking and laundry for me, alas.

Love you all! I hope everything's going great with school and seminary and everything!

Sister Heaton
