This week's been a good and busy one!
First things first, I started training this week! There weren't 18 new
sisters, as we'd been previously told-- more like 8 or 11 or something.
My trainee's name is Sister Pearl, and she's awesome. She's already
throwing herself into the work, being really proactive and brave and
making sure she gets heard, which is awesome. Having proactive
companions is the best. Her Chinese is already really good-- I've been
super impressed. I've found myself forgetting that things like phone
calls and understanding people's Chinese is still really new to her.
Oops! But she'll do awesome. Whom the Lord calls, he qualifies! She's
kind of from Southern California, but has moved all around the US, so
isn't really from anywhere. She is an English major at BYU, and is 21.
Training's the best! We're already seeing miracles!
We had 3 people at church on Sunday, Wong Siuje, Jim
Jimuih (!!), and Tong Saang, who we found several weeks ago and is
super busy but still willing to come to church sometimes. It was
awesome! That's the most we've had come to church since I've been in
this area. We hadn't been able to get a hold of Jim Jimuih for 2 whole
weeks, and we were worried because her husband thought she would have to
pay money every time she came to church, so he didn't want her to go,
so we thought he maybe had told her not to answer our phone calls. But
on Thursday, she finally picked up the phone! We saw her on Saturday and
she came to church on Sunday! Nice! Fornia didn't come to church, but
she really wants to know if the Book of Mormon is true! We're excited
about her. Also, she was kind of shocked when we told her the Buddhist
gods don't exist. Maybe it was a bit bold, but it just felt like the
right thing to say!
Then Friday, while we were finding, about 2 minutes
before it was time to get dinner, we started talking to this lady, who
is one of those Preach My Gospel talks about that are searching for the
truth and know not where to find it. It was really cool, because she was
actually quite nervous to talk to us, since the nickname Mormon Church
here has bad connotations, and people will call us evil church and other
churches and schools will preach against our church, but when we
started telling her about the Book of Mormon and sharing parts of it
with her, she was totally feeling the Spirit and reading it hungrily,
and has told us she's been looking for a church for some time but has
never been able to find one that she feels right about, and she found
that we could answer pretty much all of her questions and confusions
about God. It was really cool. We ended up talking to her straight
through our dinner time, though it only felt like 15 minutes, and we had
an appointment right after, so we were like "What are we going to do?
We're so hungry!" But then! When we finished talking to that lady,
Justine, my recent convert from my first Sunday in Hong Kong was just
standing there with a couple of other girls I've met a few times who
live over in Kwai Chung, which is over an hour away, and they just run
over and hug me! It turns out they wanted to come to our ward's sports
night? I don't know why, it's forever away. But they were super nice and
love us and got dinner for us and brought it to the church for us.
Heavenly Father watches over us! Even in the form of funny teenage
girls.
Also, the Book of Mormon has so much power. I've
been making a concerted effort the last week or so to use it in every
contact when we go finding, and it really makes a difference. We've been
finding so many more people who have real interest, or at least making
people who otherwise wouldn't have interest at least curious. It's also a
really easy way to help them know how we're different from any other
church in the world, because the difference is right there in our hands.
It's so cool! The Book of Mormon rocks!
Anyway, this week's been good. I'm looking forward
to a fun move with Sister Pearl! And I know our picture together is kind
of awkward. Hopefully we'll take a better one together later today.
Love you all!
Sister Heaton
P.S. That's Wong Siuje! And Sister Larson and I in our matching shirts we bought a couple of weeks ago.
