Hi family!
First off, can I just say that my mind is blown that it's almost Thanksgiving? I guess it's on the early end this year, but still. November is absolutely flying by. Also I realized today that I've already been in Hong Kong as long as I was in Scotland, which also blows my mind because in some ways I still feel like I just got here. I guess the language barrier does make a difference. But I feel like my language is doing pretty well, which is great!
This week was good. I'm trying to remember what happened, since everything kind of mushes together in my mind.
Yesterday, we had dinner with the Yuen family, a family in Sham Shui Po ward who live feeding the missionaries-- they said it was their Thanksgiving dinner to us. It wasn't like any Thanksgiving I've had, but it was so delicious. Anyway, Brother Yuen served in Hong Kong around the same time as mom, and he showed me a couple of pictures of the entire mission, and I found Mom! It was so fun! Mom, I think he's going to scan them and email them to you. If I remember correctly, in the more faded one he's like 2 rows above you and a little bit to the left, with kind of a triangle-shaped face. Another guy in our ward is a couple rows above him and to the right a little bit, wearing glasses. They were fun to look at.
Our investigator Tom, the 16-year-old boy, is doing so well! I'm so excited about him, it's ridiculous. He's been really great about praying everyday and reading the Book of Mormon and coming to church every week. It's so cool. We ask him once to do something, and he does it, and continues to do it, like praying everyday. I love it! On Saturday he hesitantly accepted a baptismal date for the end of December, since he's still not sure on things yet (even though he believes what we teach him is true!), and we also invited him to read Alma 7, really ponder about whether it's of God, whether it's true, and then to really pray about it. I then felt the Spirit so strong as I promised him when he did that, he would know the Book of Mormon is true, and he looked totally willing to do that. He's totally going to get an answer!! So excited!! I've also been helping him learn English, and he's started getting the grammar more. It's really neat to watch. Last time I helped him with his English, it was a super hard concept to explain, and I kind of floundered through trying to explain it to him for a bit, but then I said a little prayer to know how to teach him, and after that it just came, and he started to really get it. It was so neat. It was cool to see how the Lord cares about his English learning as well as his gospel learning. We also started teaching his younger sister Yuki this week, because their mom wants them both to get English help from us, so she basically handed us a new investigator, which was nice. Then she brought 2 of her friends, and one of her friends seemed like she has a lot of potential. Yuki doesn't seem to have as much gospel interest as Tom does, but I hope we can help her have that interest!
We also had another investigator turned over to us from another set of missionaries, since she lives in our area, and I think she's totally prepared as well. Her name's Nicole and she's 17, and just seems to get what is being taught to her so well. She's super friendly and super cute as well. I'm excited about her.
Also, thanks to the relief society sisters who sent me a package! It was totally unexpected, and therefore quite enjoyable! There were things like a magnet note-pad and a candle, and all of the things in the box had a good inspirational quote attached to it. Thanks!
Also, the mini-Preach My Gospel came in the mail! You know you're a missionary when you think the best mail you've gotten in a long time is a mini Preach My Gospel. It's seriously so convenient, and saves my back for those days when I need to bring it somewhere.
That also reminds me of something I ran across today in Preach My Gospel. In a section on understanding the culture, there's a suggested Personal or Companion Study Activity that was like "Imagine you are serving a mission in Asia. You are going to teach about the Resurrection, but you know there are a lot of Buddhists who believe in reincarnation. How would you explain resurrection in a clear way to help them understand that it is not the same as reincarnation?" And I was like "Imagine? This is my life! I've done that twice this week!" It was super weird, because the last couple weeks are the first times we've really had to explain that difference, so seeing it in Preach My Gospel, it was like "They know me! What!"
I feel like the importance of the Book of Mormon has been pressing on my mind a lot lately. I notice there are times (aka almost every day) when I don't want to read Preach My Gospel or other things because I just want to read the Book of Mormon. Or like this morning, I was thinking "I don't want to write letters this afternoon, I just want to read the Book of Mormon! (and Jesus the Christ)." It's so important for maintaining our everyday faith, and gaining the power to resist temptation and overcome any negative or impatient feelings we have. I love the Book of Mormon! Read it! Everyday!
Anyway, that's pretty much my week. Love you all!
Sister Heaton
