12/10/2012: Life's good

Hey fam!

Life is good out here! Things are going great! This week Tom's started recognizing when he feels the Spirit! Yay! He said after reading Mosiah 2 this week he just felt really good. He's also starting to get to know more people in the ward, and there's been this one Young Men's leader who's really just been watching out for him. It's been great. Last night Tom came to the My Conversion Story Fireside, which our mission puts on at the end of every move, and missionaries who are going home ask one of their converts or ward members to share their story. Tom said he felt good after it, and was really curious about priesthood blessings, because one of the girls sharing her testimony brought it up. When I explained it to him, he was like "how do I get one? Who do I talk to?" Yay! He has so much faith! Then that same young men's leader started talking to him for awhile, and just before they left they came to find me, and they asked me about how he would get the form to get his parents' permission for him to be baptized, which tells me that Tom has pretty much decided he wants to be baptized!! Yay!! He's not quite ready to be baptized yet, but he'll get there soon!

Then we've started teaching this young mom named Ngau Jimuih who's from Mainland originally and has a baby. She's so awesome. She's just so willing to do everything without any persuasion on our part. It's super weird, but super awesome. Like when we met her on the street, we spoke for about 30 seconds and asked if we could share the gospel with her, and she was like "Yeah! Sure!" She's already come to church twice, and has loved it. She saw an 8-year-old baptism yesterday, and thought it was so great. She's so humble and willing to learn. The first time we taught her we were telling her how God and Jesus Christ are two different people, and she said "Oh, I always thought they were the same person. But now I know! Thank you for helping me know!" She just believes everything we say without question, and she really gets what we teach her, even though she has almost no religious background whatsoever. Usually we have to spend a whole lesson on who God is and prayer, but she got it, so we were able to teach her the entire Restoration lesson. Last week we had met her for about 15 minutes and talked a little bit about prayer, but she had to go take care of something for her baby, so we figured we'd have to teach more about prayer the next time and really commit her to do it, only to find out when we had our first real lesson with her, she told us she had forgotten exactly how prayer works, but had been trying to have conversations with God. Her baby was having trouble with a bad skin rash, so she told God that if He would help her baby's skin get better, she'd get baptized. Lo and behold, not more than 2 days later, her baby was back to normal. She really has faith like a child. It's so cool. We're going to extend a baptismal date to her this week, which also happens to be on my birthday! I hope she makes it!! That would be the best birthday present ever!

We also met an interesting man named Mr Wu this week when we were finding. He came up to us while we were talking to another woman and was like "Oh! Jesus!" We taught him and his daughter the next day (his wife was in the next room, no worries), and found out that 1) he learned about Jesus when he was in prison for robbery, 2) he's a chain smoker, 3) he gambles, 4) he drinks, and 5) he loves coffee and tea. But he actually seems interested! He's just silly. For example, he has a laminated picture of himself in his wallet from when he was in his 20s, and likes to show it to people and ask them "Aren't I good-looking?" We decided to turn him over to the elders. Haha. But his daughter was super sweet and innocent and well-behaved, and they both came to church on Sunday! During our lesson with his family this week, though, he offered us tea and coffee several times, which of course we declined and explained why every time. When we wouldn't take tea, he offered us cigarettes. In the middle of the lesson. He has a lot of changing he needs to do, but I think he can do it! Haha. He smoked at least 3 cigarettes throughout the course of our lesson with him. The elders will have their work cut out for them!

I also had a neat experience when I was on the MTR (Metro) the other day. I noticed a young teenage boy reading my tag, so I started talking to him. I noticed throughout our short conversation that he had a hearing aid and just a very sweet, innocent look about him. When we told him the gospel helps us know our individual worth, he sounded really interested, and he freely gave us his phone number. We got off the MTR, but I just had this really special feeling for the next 5 or so minutes. I just really had the feeling like he was one of those truly angelic spirits who's so prepared to hear the gospel. Luckily the elders in the area he lives are really good and loving, so I'm really excited about him.

Love you all!

Sister Heaton
